Need a superyacht ETO?

With great power comes great responsibility, so choose your ETO wisely!

SOCRATES

Hi, I am Ante and it might not be Socrates who said it :)

Nonetheless, you should probably be careful about picking an ETO for your yacht.

I am a 36-year-old ETO who has worked in yachting since 2020.

Prior to yachting, I climbed my way up from Assistant Electrician to Chief Electrician role in the cruise industry.

Does your yacht need an ETO?

ETO/AVIT @ MY Amoa (70m)
Oct 2023 - present

In charge of both electrical and AVIT systems.

Excellent reference letter from Chief Engineer straight after the first contract.

Areas of responsibility: Crestron, Dante, Starlink, BlueSim/Pepwave, Peplink, VSAT, TVRO, Palo Alto, Cisco switches and WLCs, MS365, Lutron, Kaleidescape, CCTV, Hytera UHF, Praxis, Raytheon and much more.

EXPERIENCE
ETO @ Genting Cruise Line
Aug 2019 - Feb 2020

Big emphasis on creating a ship's cyber security strategy.

Created a master drawing of how ship's OT systems were interconnected as well as how they were connected to the IT network. Identifying potential weak links and cooperating directly with the DNV and equipment manufacturers to ensure compliance was almost a daily matter.

Reference letter from Chief Electrician.

Other responsibilities: Navigation and Communication (Wärtsilä/Sam Electronics/Furuno), Automation (Valmarine), Fire detection (Consilium), PA (Bosch/Diskowski), UHF comms (Motorola) Fire doors (Kaefer), Sliding doors (Dorma) IssuTrax administration, AMOS, Passenger Information System…

ETO @ TUI Cruises
May 2019 - Jul 2019

My contract here was all about 3 things: UPSs, Fire detection system and Bridge equipment.

I was dealing with this equipment on a daily basis - either troubleshooting UPSs or figuring out Fire detection system fanthom alarms or a random piece of Bridge equipment would start misbehaving.

Great learning experience for sure and a reference letter from Chief Electrician for a job well done.

Chief Electrician @ Silversea Cruises
Sep 2018 - Feb 2019

Led a team of 4.

Responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the ship's electrical installations in accordance with the Classification Society and Flag State requirements.

During the first 2 weeks, I felt like I bit off more than I can chew and often felt stressed - I guess this is what they call Imposter syndrome.

But I just decided to take it one day at a time, kept steadily improving and in the end did a pretty decent job - reference letters from both Chief Engineers confirm it.

Sole Electrician @ Premier Cruises Ltd.
Oct 2016 - Nov 2017

As the sole electrician on board a 90m cruise ship, I was responsible for the entire Electrical and AV/IT system and was regularly helping out with the Refrigeration, Ventilation and Provision systems.

Really had to prioritize wisely to get the most important things done in time and it was at this time I learned about Pareto principle.
Paraphrasing Pareto, 20% of the actions bring 80% of the results.

Since then, I've maintained a strong focus on the critical 20% in both my professional and personal life.

Hotel Technician @ AIDA Cruises
Oct 2013 - Nov 2014

In charge of Galley, Laundry and Spa equipment.

This role was a great learning experience since I was working independently and was doing all the electrical and mechanical repairs on the equipment in question.

Assistant Electrician @ Oceania Cruises
Feb 2012 - Jun 2013

My first cruise ship.

Learned how not to get electrocuted :)

Gained a lot of insights on what it means to be an electrician by shadowing older colleagues.

Got a grasp of how the ship's electrical power is generated and distributed.

Long story short - cruise ships from 2012 to 2020 and yachts from 2020.

ETO @ MY Tranquility (90m)
Aug 2020 - Aug 2023

Almost exclusively focused on the ETO aspect (since there was an AVIT officer on board).

Numerous charters and several refits. Been part of a major Navigation system refit where new Radar antennas, Workstations, DGPSs, and a lot of ancillary equipment has been installed.

Loved the yacht and the people but had to leave after the ETO role was removed from the manning structure (ownership change).

Reference letters from three Captains and three Chief Engineers.

Areas of responsibility: Switchboards and Distribution panels, Gensets (MTU), Main Engines (MTU), Thrusters (Jastram/Veth), Steering gears (Rolls Royce/Raytheon), DP (Sirehna), Stabilisers (Rolls Royce), Navigation (Raytheon), Automation (Alewijnse/Siemens), Fire detection (Consilium), UPSs (ABB/GE/APC), PLCs (Mitshubishi/Siemens/Omron), Fire doors (Kaefer), Sliding doors (NAU/Reisinger), Watertight doors (Winel), Hydraulics (Winel/Van Driel/Newthex), Elevators (HML), Pool&Jacuzzi (Marine Pool Systems), Lighting system (RENA/Crestron/Pharos), Laundry (Miele), Galley (Hobart/Miele/Rational), Tenders (Hodgdon/Volvo Penta), Sauna&Steam room (Balnea), Interior Blinds&Sheers&Curtains control (Crestron/Somfy)…

EDUCATION

I gained theoretical and some practical knowledge about electrical engineering, information technology and ship's electrical systems' peculiarities during my studies at Faculty of Maritime Studies in Split, Croatia.

Bachelor's degree successfully obtained in 2011 in Maritime Electrical and Information Technology.

REFERENCES

Ante’s working knowledge of the yacht’s electrical installation and equipment was a great benefit during my initial familiarisation with the vessel, and laterally with the planning and execution of 2 refit periods.

I always found Ante to be honest, calm and professional in the application of his duties and he was a sociable, well-liked member of the yacht’s crew.

He was self-motivated and was able to manage his areas of responsibility well through meticulous forward planning on his own behalf.
